The garden group was set up in April 2011 and we meet, usually, on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. and this year we have averaged 17 members attending our visits and meetings.
The purpose of our gardening group is to explore and learn about gardens and plants through visiting gardens and arranging talks. Venues are occasionally reached by local transport but more often by car sharing. This year we organised a coach trip to Chirk Castle and Gardens in June with the weather on our side; raining in Birmingham but beautiful at Chirk. This was a full day visit and it was open to all U3A members. This proved to be a very successful day with 46 members taking part.
We will have held 10 meetings this year and we had two very successful and well attended talks in November and February. We also enjoyed our annual meal in January, at the Brasserie, UCB.
Our best attended visit was to Ashwoods Nursery for a guided tour round “John’s Garden”. This garden featured on BBC’s Great British Gardens presented by Carol Klein. It’s a local garden centre, near Kinver, Kingswinsford and well worth a visit. John’s garden is open for charity a few days a year.
As usual we held a planning meeting for members to suggest gardens for us to visit and this will be finalised by our small steering group. Look on the website in November for our list of visits. Many thanks to Chris and Mike who continue to “lend” their lovely garden for this meeting. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the running of the group, in particular, to those who regularly give lifts but also to those who just come to enjoy the gardens and make the group so enjoyable.
We are always happy to welcome new members; we have no upper limit to numbers.
