During our third year the Birdwatching Group has visited 7 sites in and around Birmingham and has recorded
73 different species.
In addition to our old favourite sites including Sandwell Valley RSPB, Winterbourne Gardens, Witton Lakes,
Dartmouth Park and Upton Warren we visited Perry Hall Park for the first time on an extremely cold February
day and were rewarded by seeing 33 species. Members donated birdseed to support the work of the Ranger
who looks after several birdfeeders set up behind his hut.
The West Midlands now has large numbers of escapee Ring-Necked Parakeets but although individual Members have seen them in Sandwell Valley, Perry Hall Park and at the Shard End roost, we have yet to see them as a Group, maybe next year.
Our Group has risen to new heights recently as we now submit our sightings to the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) BirdTracker website. My thanks to Andrew Bull for organising a meeting at Saltwels Reserve with the WMBC Treasurer Andy Thomas who showed us around the site and encouraged us to record our sightings thus becoming “citizen scientists”.
Our 2020 programme can be found in the Links Column on the right.
