Environmental Issues

Coordinator: Wiebina Heesterman
Contact: Environmental Issues

The Group has two vacancies.
----------------------------
The main focus of the Environment Group is the scientific background of the topics we have chosen for the year 2019. However, we feel we need to be personally involved in an attempt of mitigating the severity of the inevitable outcomes of the fact that humanity is engaged in overstretching the Earth’s natural resources. It leads to water shortages, loss of fauna and flora and other unfortunate consequences of a changing climate.

Therefore the themes to be discussed in two of the monthly meetings cover ways in which ordinary people like you and me might deal with questions, such as “Do I save energy by using water boiled in my kettle or water heated by gas, which means cold water goes to waste?” and “Are all household cleaners and paints equally good or equally bad for the environment?”

The sessions begin with members telling each other what they have read or heard about the day’s topic, discussing the various issues, and end with a one or two examples of what measures have been taken in other countries to limit the consequences of climate change and/or overuse of natural resources. By that time we will certainly be in the mood for coffee and biscuits.

The Environment Group meets at our house, on the Thursday morning after the General meeting.

Climate change and what can be done to reverse it, is of course, a recurring subject. The September topic was ‘Drought’ and what is being done about and what can be done.

The topics for 2019 are:

3 January 2019 - Pollination and food production
7 February 2019 - Review of 2018
7 March 2019 - Air pollution
4 April 2019 - The hidden life of trees
2 May 2019 - Transparency of food systems
6 June 2019 - Waste minimisation
4 July 2019 - Transport
------------------------------------------------------------------------
August no regular meeting - Possibly a social meeting later in the month
------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 September 2019 - Minimising heat loss in the home
3 October 2019 - Life under our feet
7 November 2019 - Agriculture in a changing world
5 December 2019 - Biodiversity and health
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
At some stage we may well return to subjects already dealt with; if the Group thinks it deserves further coverage
