Writing for Pleasure
Our latest Writing Challenges are :
Around the UK in 80 words - such a glorious concept.
and the longer piece The Easter Holiday which went Wrong!!!!
Now there's a great topic, especially in current pandemic times.
We are waiting for the time when we can do some active research on Croydon pubs;
the virtual pub crawl just being the Starter for 10!
Do you fancy joining the group - no previous experience needed. Get in touch and join us for a trial session.
The group has now been meeting via Zoom for ten months, and like many others, we now congregate twice a month rather than just the once. The additional session concentrates on short writing exercises, like a story told in 50 words, or three sentences based around words you would not use in ordinary conversation. A lot of fun, but also an interesting way of improving one’s technique.
This leaves us with a longer piece to write for the regular monthly meeting, everybody coming up with their own slant on the theme agreed on for that month. Amongst other topics, we have covered the Mayflower anniversary, the horror genre, newspaper journalism, birthdays, ‘Aunt Agatha in the Doorway’, and just recently a piece based on the origin of pub names, which did at least allow us to undertake a virtual pub crawl, and spread the knowledge of how ‘The Surprise’ in Shirley came to be so called. It never ceases to amaze how many different approaches are possible on the same subject.
Sadly, not all our members are able to get to us via Zoom, and we do our best to keep in touch by post and phone. It’s not perfect, and we all long to meet again in person. Hopefully, that’s not too far away, but in the meantime, Zoom provides a brilliant alternative.
