MOTO (members on their own)
Meeting on Zoom every Thursday from 10.30- 12.00 for coffee and a chat.
“Members on their Own” is a network within Croydon U3A designed to enable members who are on their own to meet others in the same situation. It is not a group in the usual sense of a U3A group in that we do not have a programme or regular meetings. Activities are organised by members of MOTO and can include anything which the members are prepared to organise. In its first few months, it has included coffee mornings, luncheons and a weekend away. The network functions mainly by email, because of its nature. If you are not on email, we will circulate your telephone number and interests to other members of the network, but you will need to identify an “email buddy” who is prepared to pass on information about events to you. Members are expected to take their turn at organising.
Moto is not a traditional Interest Group as such, more a bunch of members who are on their own, for whatever reason, and would like to get out more. Often, when people are slightly older, it’s harder to get out and meet new people on your own. MOTO is the solution – a loose band of brothers!
The joint co-ordinators are stepping down and we need someone to come forward and look after the contact details and share ideas and arrangements. This is not a Group Leader role, more a co-ordinator position that could be shared.
The ‘model’ relies on the members in the ‘group’ coming up with ideas and taking it in turns to suggest / organise something. There is great merit in an informal group which increases social contact, offers variety, and opportunities to share experiences, problems and solutions with others.
Over the past year MOTO members have dined at Quaglino’s, The Surprise Inn, The White Bear and The Masonic Halls. There has been a sailing adventure on Bewl Water, a 60s night, a weekend in Edinburgh, a day trip to Rochester, coffee mornings and an afternoon tea. All these were arranged by different MOTO members.
