Theatre Visits Group
Ripon & District Theatre Visits Group continues to grow in number and attract new members. Whilst it is good to know this is happening, the numbers who actually support our programme by comimg on visits remains relatively small. We try to make our forward programme attractive and varied but the fact is that choice of productions remains quite limited. Theatre audiences have certainly grown during the last 12 months but prices are rising and commercial uncertainties continue for production companies. This is reflected by the limited number of productions being listed in future 2023 programmes.
Recent features of current productions, such as minimal sets and smaller casts, with actors often playing several different roles, continue in the effort to keep costs down. We are seeing increasing physicality on stage which clearly requires actors to maintain a high level of fitness and their ability to also play a musical instrument is often becoming part of an actors skillset.
In February 2022, we tried something different and held our first ever social lunch in North Stainley. This proved both popular and successful by attracting the largest ever single get together of Theatre Visits Group members.
In September 2022 we had an 'Away Day' in Keswick to see a production of 'Brief Encounter' at Theatre by the Lake. The production was cleverly performed in the round, full of innovative lighting effects and a masterclass in choreography. The theatre is in a lovely location and proved both popular and successful, so much so that we decided to have another day trip to Keswick in July last year when we were treated to an exciting musical production of 'Blonde Bombshells of 1943'. It proved once again a great day out. Because of the populatity and continuing support of members for a Keswick away day, we have decided to do the same again this year. This will be to attend a matinee production of 'Brassed Off' on Tuesday July 23rd so put that date in your diaries and more detailed info will be informed in due course.
The latest edition of our Newssheet compiled by our 'Theatrical Newshound', and redoubtable editor, Arlene Coulson, has alreacdy been sent to members.
