Walton-on-Thames 10.00–12.00 Second & fourth Wednesdays monthly
The game is played in accordance with the rules of the British Mah Jong Association. It is a Chinese game and has similarities to the card game of Rummy but it is played with tiles, not cards, and the suits are called characters, circles and bamboo. There are also winds and dragons.
In October 2009 the then groups organiser asked the current Leader to start up a Mah Jong group. We play at the Walton Centre for the Community and we do need to pay a membership fee to the Centre. Due to space limitations there can only be a maximum of twelve people playing at any one time, in groups of three or four. Players in a group are chosen at random and stay together for the session. If only five people attend then members will sit out a game in turn.
Attendance is excellent, members only being absent due to holidays or sickness. This gives rise to a varied number attending but only on two occasions over the years has a meeting been abandoned due to not enough people coming. Each member attempts to improve their game and try more difficult forms of play called ‘special hands’."
We welcome new players and are happy to teach the game to those with no experience.
