There are currently 8 German groups ranging from Near Beginners, via Improvers, 4 Intermediate groups and 1 Advanced group. They are led by 5 group leaders in their respective homes.
The groups meet fortnightly in the mornings of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
The current groups started in September 2006, shortly after The Groups Coordinator joined Elmbridge U3A upon retirement. At the time there was one German Intermediate group in existence but it closed soon afterward when the group leader left.
The original Group Coordinator is of German origin and retired teacher. She started in September 2006 with 2 groups, one for absolute beginners comprising 6 learners, one for advanced linguists with 4 members. Only one of those original members still attends regularly.
As numbers grew and her conservatory became too small to accommodate everyone comfortably, the groups were divided and new courses set up, until there were 5 groups. Then there was a demand for a new beginners’ course. First one and then another and two of the advanced students with teaching skills took on a group each. Two more German ladies, both experienced teachers, joined the Advanced group, and they likewise offered to lead a German group each, taking over one of the intermediate groups and setting up another beginners class, so that we now have 8 groups with a total of some 60 people practising and improving their skills in understanding and speaking German. All groups concentrate on the spoken word, using textbooks as well as a variety of other material. They all, and the Advanced group in particular, cover a range of cultural, historical, and political topics relating to Germany.
It is expected that in future some intermediate groups may amalgamate and possibly another beginners course will be established, as new members join our U3A.
Over the years, some group members have been taken to Germany, three times to Berlin, once each to Hamburg and Weimar and Dresden. There may be more trips in the future. The various current groups are:
