Poetry for Pleasure

The group is meeting in the village Community Room.

Another great session in November with the bonus of a scrummy cake supplied by Linda! The theme was 'fantasy' and included poems as diverse as Tolkein, Shakespeare and more modern writers such as Carol Anne Duffy and Bernardine Evaristo. Here is a list of the poems we read:

"The Ents Wives" (J R R Tolkein); "Frost Fair" (Carol Anne Duffy); "The Song About An Old Troll" (J R R Tolkein); The Witches' Speech from Macbeth (Shakeaspeare); "Tam O'Shanter" (Robert Burns); "The Enchanted Forest" (Connie Markham Wong); "Do You Know Where the Fairies Live?" (Anne Pollock); "Spellbound" (Emily Bronte); "Mixed Brews" (Clive Sansom); "The Emperor's Babe" (Bernardine Evaristo) and "Talk of Custard the Dragon" (Ogden Nash).

We meet again in December when the topic will be "The Sea".

Pauline led the October session where we read poems about things of value to us. It's a wide subject and was interpreted in a number of different ways. Jim read a poem by Robert Burns entitled "The Inventory, in answer to a mandate by the surveyor of taxes" and Linda read a poem she'd written "Calm before the Storm" describing waiting in the wings to go on stage. Other poems were "Bird on the Wire" (Amanda Dalton); "Plain Tree outside Ward 78" (Helen Dunmore); "It Was Long Ago" (Eleanor Farjeon); "Tewksbury Road" (John Masefield); "The Listener" (Walter De La Mare); "The Value of Things" (K C R Clarke); "Things That Are Hard to Find" (Dr John Celes); "Loveliest of Trees The Cherry Now" (A E Houseman); "The Choice" (Dorothy Parker); "I Wished I'd Looked After My Teeth" (Pam Ayres); "The Station" (Robert Hastings); "A Sultan's Love Song (John Betjeman); "River Tyne" (Paul Reed); "A Handmade Gift" (Treena Graves) and "Precious Heirlooms" (Anon).
