Newport / Casnewydd South-East Wales

French Debutants

Convenor: Barbara Phillips
Meeting: Every Wednesday during Term time 14.15 - 15.45

Text book: Façon de Parler. 4th Edition (or as close as you can get)

The text book is all very well in theory; with the current situation re Covid we can’t actually meet face to face, but we are doing our best with IT, and we are trying out various different “virtual meetings” when we can get our heads around the technology. This feels unfair to those without laptops or tablets, but we haven’t figured a way around it. Yet. Once we have got that sorted we will have to go back to the text book: we need the structure and the grammar, the basic building blocks of any language. I don’t give (much) homework, but have been known to suggest that the group looks at the next chapter or exercise before we meet again. If your French is good enough that you can wing it, that’s fine. If it isn’t and you still haven’t done it, that doesn’t matter either as we will go through it in class.

We are a mixed ability group, and were initially called French Beginners, but had to change that when the group had been running for nearly ten years and some of the group members are not truly beginners any more, but stay with us for the companionship.

At the moment, the group are working their way slowly, very slowly, through a French translation of Pride and Prejudice. It needs transcribing to avoid tenses we haven’t covered yet, but that is very good for my French! The Debs can get away with this because we are not the French Literature Group, who have to be stricter about these things.

If you haven’t done much French since school, or if you have planned holidays in France and want to chat to the locals, (when travel is possible again!) why not join us? If you contact me (click on the bird at the top right of this page) I will try to answer any questions, and fill you in on how P&P is going, give you clues to the translation etc.

We are a very sociable group, looking forward to meeting up again and going out to celebrate anyone’s birthday, Christmas or simply the fact that it is Wednesday. Come along, give us a try!
