Backgammon
Backgammon is a very interesting and sociable game which takes half an hour to learn but a lifetime to master. It dates back 5-6,000 years and a 16th Century English version was called ‘Irish’
It is a two-player game with one person racing against the other using the value of the dice to move their counters round the 24 points on the board. Meanwhile the opponent is moving in the opposite direction, hindering your moves. You can remove the opposition’s men if you land on them but, of course, they can do the same to you!
The game is a fascinating combination of the luck of the throw and the player’s strategic decisions. It is sometimes referred to as a balance between ‘risk’ and ‘reward’. Many games can turn on a single throw making it incredibly entertaining if you win and incredibly frustrating if you lose.
You don’t need any equipment, (all will be provided), just bring yourself along to the sessions and someone will help you to learn the basics and get you started.
We are currently meeting at the Newtonbreda Tesco in their community room from 1330 every second Tuesday. The next few dates are 13th and 27th February and 12th and 26th March 2024.
