In January of this year Belfast U3A Creative Writing Group was contacted by the producer of the Radio Ulster programme “Time of Our Lives” which is broadcast on a Sunday afternoon. The presenter waslooking for older people who would be prepared to record and read on air a personal story. Initially they were only seeking one story but when they received the collection of stories submitted from which to make their choice, the BBC loved them and decided to record them all. In April six members of the Group – Lena McCann, Sheila Leggett, Pamela McDowell, Caroline Magowan, Holly Ferres and Joan Hayes visited the BBC and recorded their stories. They dedicated their stories to our much loved and sadly missed former Chair Betty O’Rawe - herself a former producer with the BBC. On different Sundays between May and August the stories were heard over the airwaves. It was a wonderful opportunity and delightful experience for Belfast Creative Writing
Group and for the members who participated. The stories – edited for broadcasting -are presented here in full. Click on the links at the right hand side of the page to access.
“In an atmosphere of good humour, friendship and trust
Monday afternoons have become a must
To tell our stories and enjoy the craic
And disguise our dismay when we get the feedback!
From little acorns however, big trees have indeed grown
What authors have emerged from the virtual unknown!
It could very well be that some fine day
We will have a ‘Writer in Residence’ in the U3a”…
