Walking - Scramblers

This is a monthly walk in the Mournes to get those leg muscles and lungs working and experience beautiful views in great company. A good level of fitness and the right equipment are essential. Usually 7-9 miles hill walking. We take a packed lunch and meet at central points to car share. We are not averse to sharing a convivial meal in a good hostelry on the way home.

This group meets on the first Thursday of each month. 10.30am start but meet to car share earlier.

Please note:
The Third Age Trust’s Public Liability Insurance covers U3A members while out walking, but does not provide personal accident insurance. Participants on walks (including guests) should take responsibility for their own care, safety and equipment. They should remain with the group.

Walkers should be prepared for a long day with an early start. You may wish to make arrangements for the journey with those you would normally travel with. Otherwise meet at 8.00am in Hillsborough on the main road near the entrance to the forest car park (work on the car park is continuing at present) or, at Sprucefield Park and Ride. NB This closes at 8.00pm.
Drive to Enniskillen and from there follow signs for Sligo and Marble Arch Caves. Meet in the Caves Visitor Centre from 10.00am. We plan to move on at approximately 10.45am to the Cuilcagh Mountain car park, a short distance away.
The walk follows a track initially for about 4 km before the start of the boardwalk to the top of the mountain. Expect a few short steep sections on the way up. The ascent usually takes about two hours and slightly less on the way down. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a packed lunch.
There is the option to eat afterwards in the Three Ways Inn on the way back to Enniskillen. Those interested can let the leader know that morning.
