Genealogy

The Genealogy Group ran from the start of the U3A in Sherborne until it had to stop meeting during the Covid lockdown. It will restart for the 2023-24 session..

Many people feel an urge to investigate who their ancestors were, where they lived and what their occupations were. Much of this investigation can now be done online by subscribing to websites such as Ancestry or FindMyPast and searching their indexed data collections. But there are also sites such as indexed Birth, Marriage and Death Registrations from the General Register Office of the Government, or FamilySearch with many parish and census indexed records provided by the Church of the Latter Day Saints or indexed voluntary transcriptions such as FreeBMD, FreeCEN and FreeREG.

The Group is aimed at those already active in their family history research and afternoon meetings once a month will take the form of one or two presentations from members on their recent findings (usually about their own family tree). All members would be expected to want to contribute at some stage through the year.
