Art Talks and Trips
The groups focus on some of the major art exhibitions that are held in London, with 2019-20 being another particularly rich year for visual art shows. The meetings provide some background information about the artist and/or movement, setting the work in the context of its time. Using slides, we look at the ‘language’ of the works featured in the exhibitions so that when we come to visit them our responses will be more informed. Visits to London, usually by train, are arranged (perhaps two per term) and outings to several local galleries are arranged where appropriate. We have visited exhibitions in Woking, Chichester, Salisbury and Cardiff in the past two years and also enjoyed an outing to Kelmscott Manor. It is also possible for people to visit these exhibitions independently. In 2019 we ventured further afield, with a 5 night study tour to Amsterdam (which included The Hague and Haarlem) and in 2020 a tour to Madrid is planned.
There are currently two groups working in parallel, meeting every 3 weeks on a Thursday afternoon or a Friday morning. Some ‘Pop- up’ lectures are also available, to accommodate those who are interested but unable to join the regular group sessions. The venue for regular groups is usually the upstairs Studio Room in Digby Memorial Hall, Digby Road, Sherborne and Pop-ups are in the main hall.
