Sherborne

Welcome

Welcome to the Sherborne branch of U3A. We are fortunate to be based in what is surely one of the most beautiful towns in rural Dorset, with its abbey and wealth of hamstone buildings.

As a U3A branch, we are committed to the principle of sharing or advancing knowledge among mainly retired people and providing facilities for leisure time and recreational activities.

Advice for potential new members of Sherborne U3A

Unlike most U3As, we do not have a general monthly meeting with a speaker for all members, we are very much a collection of groups. Details of all our groups can be obtained from the Groups page on our website.

We do have a regular monthly Coffee Morning open to all members, their guests and any prospective members on the third Wednesday of every month from 10.15 to 11.45 a.m. in the Cheap Street Church Hall in Sherborne. Prospective new members are very welcome to come along. Several committee members are usually there and you can ask and receive answers to any questions.

Before joining Sherborne U3A, we like our new members to find a group or groups which they wish to join (and which has space for them) before committing to formally join Sherborne U3A. We prefer prospective members to attend one or two "taster" sessions first.

Please let us know (via the Contact page on our website) the group(s) that you are interested in joining and we will get the group leader(s) to make contact. We must warn you that some groups are already full and you may have to wait for a space to become available. Most group leaders keep a waiting list of prospective members. Hopefully, you can find a group with space available that you wish to join.

A few groups, like walking groups, make no additional charge to participate but those groups that incur costs, particularly those that hire a hall or room, are expected to cover a proportion of their costs from the group membership.

If you do decide to join, the membership enrolment form can be downloaded from the "Links" page on our website. Membership costs £20 per year per person, covers as many activities as you wish to join and runs from 1st September to 31st August each year.
