The Current affairs group tackle some fascinating subjects.

Discussions on a wide range of current news took place, some themes explored were,

should:-

: Harry attend the Coronation?

: There be a review of old literature through the eyes of 'sensitive readers'?

: We eat seasonally?

: Prisoners be released after serving half their time?

: The BBC's pursuit of replacing well respected, knowledgeable presenters in order to attract younger people?

The consensus on reviewing literature such as classic tales like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, was that they should not be altered.

We should however eat more seasonally and more homegrown food but everyone has the opportunity to eat a variety of worldwide foods, which even though they do not always taste good out of season, do prove hard to resist for the variety they offer.

Prisoners should serve their sentence but there was a split view on the BBC’s change of presenters, particularly on the radio.

A question on immigration and the £7million a day spent on housing, brought a lively discussion.

The use of fruit and mushroom skins as an alternative to leather and an intriguing question on an exascale computer that can carry out one quintrillion calculations a second.

How would you even write a quintrillion? (1,000,000,000,000,000,000)

This Current Affairs Group is currently full but if there is anyone who would like to start a Current Affairs Group 2 we would offer support to do so.

It is a lovely group to run, no pressure and a great way of meeting, discussing with a cup of tea and biscuits, what more could you ask?

See Marilyn Redfern, Groups co-ordinator, for further details on starting a Current Affairs 2 group.

October 2021

How fantastic to meet up with the members of the group after about two years!
There have been some changes in that we now meet at the Flint Avenue Community Centre, rather than at the home of Desley O'Leary.
Since the inception of the group, which Desley set up, she provided wonderful hospitality supported by John) and at today's meeting though Desley wasn't able to attend, everyone expressed their thanks to her.

The meeting was attended by eight members with the usual format of each member submitting a couple of subjects for discussion and a coffee break half way through.
