Mah Jong is a game shrouded in myth. Originally it was thought to be over 2500 years old but evidence now points to it being developed in the Ningpo area of China in the 1870s. Mah Jong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation, similar to the western card game Rummy. Played using 144 tiles, it involves a degree of chance and the basic game can be mastered in a short time. The name Mah Jong is Chinese for “Chattering Sparrows” and refers to the sound made as the tiles are shuffled on the table. The game was exclusively played in China until the early 1920s when it was discovered and immediately popularised by the British and Americans.
Our group meets in Oakroyd House, Oakroyd Avenue, Dunmow, CM6 1HQ from 4pm to 6pm on Monday afternoons each week. There is a charge of £1 for refreshments.
