Geology
Geology uses the evidence all around us in the form of rocks/ rock formations and landscapes to answer questions about the beautiful planet that we live on. The group started by gaining a basic understanding of rocks and we are moving on to look at geological history, climate change, evolution and so much more. It is an area of science where the enthusiast can know as much as the experts. It’s a very hands on science that you can enjoy wherever you travel.

We are an enthusiastic group of self learners and aim for a blend of house meetings, usually a Thursday morning in the month, together with visits to sites of interest or museums. Naturally there is some focus on the geology of Essex where we have conducted work which has contributed to a county-wide survey of rocks and stones found in Essex walls.
Members share in running the group and organising activities.
Diary dates for 2024:
- 18th April at 10.00am - 'Essex Rocks' presentation by Ian and Ros Mercer with specimens and information display, Old Friends Meeting House Stebbing
- 23rd May Field trip to Cherry Hinton Chalk Pits, 9.00 to 12.30 approx
- 20th June Sedgwick Museum Cambridge for 2.00 to 3.30pm guided tour
