Knitting and Crochet

The Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month.

Venue: Hameldon Room at the Unitarian Church, Padiham

Group Leader: Melinda Jackson

Is it a long time since you picked up your needles or hooks? Do you want to improve your skills and catch up with what’s going on in these crafts? Come and join us and we’ll help you get back into the swing of it. Or we’ll get you started if they are new to you.

The Knitting and Crochet group is one of the most cheerful and industrious groups in our u3a. You’ll always find a friendly welcome here and much encouragement as you work on your projects. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Mondays in the Unity Centre of the Nazareth Unitarian Church in Padiham.

The group was set up to help people improve their skills in these two crafts, so the meeting on the fourth Monday is usually devoted to trying out technical matters, such as different types of casting on and when they can be used, or how to substitute suitable yarns when your pattern requires a yarn which is discontinued. We are not afraid to do calculations and make swatches when the dreaded word “tension” appears. Crochet also features in these sessions, starting with basics and working towards more advanced stitches and methods.

The meeting on the second Monday gives space and time to projects being worked on by members. There’s usually happy chatter going on in the background as people compare notes, give advice, pass round cups of tea or coffee and catch up on each other’s news. Projects range from doll’s clothes to blankets, made for family and friends or even the knitter herself. Yes, we are all female, but we’re open to all members.

Occasionally we go out to events in the area, not just for knitting and crochet but also other crafts of textiles. In the last six months we have visited two impressive exhibitions in Blackburn Cathedral. One featured the sustainability of textiles and what happens to discarded clothes and the second was a series of embroidered panels illustrating the Creation from the Bible.
