Sea Shanties
Ahoy, there me hearties.
February 2024, saw nine members join the first meeting of our new Sea Shanty group,
henceforth known as “The Old Barnacles”. Member Pat, who attended said “None of us had
much experience of singing together and things were inevitably a bit shaky to start with. But
we were all able to join in with some well known shanties to get ourselves familiarised. Yes,
it was Drunken Sailor and Blow The Man Down that launched us, and quite quickly we
sorted out some of the tricks of singing the shanty successfully. We then had a go at less
well known but rousing songs such as South Australia and John Kanaka, and the magic
began. By the end of the session, we had definitely come together with our phrasing and
timing and things are looking good for our March meeting”.
Any member wishing to join the group will be welcomed, no prior talent required, just the
readiness to join in. The Old Barnacles hope, that once the better weather appears, they will
be doing some singing outdoors, maybe even on the beach at Cromer or Sheringham to get
the full feel of the sea!
