Advice from the U3A National Office

Coronavirus Advice
The Government and NHS have issued advice for members of the public following the confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.
Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
The UK Chief Medical Officers are advising anyone who has travelled to the UK from mainland China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14 days and is experiencing cough or fever or shortness of breath, to stay indoors and call NHS 111, even if symptoms are mild.
More information about the virus, as well as symptoms and advice, is available to view at:

National U3A Day

The decision has been made to postpone our first national U3A Day from 3 June 2020 to 1 October 2020 which is International Day of Older Persons. (June 3rd just falls within the estimated 12 weeks of advised social exclusion).

Many U3As have invested time and energy into planning creative and informative events to raise the profile of the movement. We have a long lead-time for this new date so plans can be reviewed and rearranged including venues and guests.

As you are aware, U3A Day is planned to maximise the opportunity to raise our profile nationally. Nationally, we will work towards signposting media attention to 1 October 2020, once that date is confirmed as safe and appropriate.

We will continue to update resources and advice on the national website. This helps us keep each other up-to-date with what is happening. The closed U3A Day Facebook site (www.facebook.com/groups/485363562065891) has a wealth of ideas and discussion points and is a very positive community.

It is also recommended that as many individual members sign up to the national online newsletter (https://www.u3a.org.uk/newsletter) to receive regular updates as to advice and measures being put in place during this unprecedented time.

Let’s look forward to a time to celebrate the wonderful organisation that is U3A! Thank you for your support.

Important Message
The National Office has now settled in to its temporary accommodation and we expect to be there for the next couple of months.

The phone system has been up and running for over a week and other functions are now becoming available. The resource centre DVDs and the shop should be available very soon. We will of course keep you updated as things progress.

The staff have worked extremely hard to get everything back up and running as quickly as possible.

This has been a disruptive time and we would like to say thank you for your patience and messages of support. It is very appreciated.

National U3A have produced some information on the Diary Project and Mindfulness - there is a link to each document on this page.

Aylsham and District U3A are now members of the Mini Scrapbox in Reepham.

This is a recycling charity run by Aylsham Churches. They recycle items that would otherwise end up in Landfill. You never know what you are going to find in the shop. Many items would suit some of our interest groups i.e. Material, cottons, wool, paper, card, needles etc etc right up to a brand new Sky HD machine, picture files for kitchen or bathroom, jigsaws.

All they ask is if you are purchasing for personal use that you have an individual membership.

If purchasing for an interest group just say you are from Aylsham U3A.

Aylsham U3A members are now able to obtain 10% discount at Woodgate Nursery, just request this at the till.  Dragonfly Flowers, at Woodgate Nursery, also offer a discount to U3A members. You may be asked to show your membership card so please make sure the card is up to date.
