Torridge

Science, Technology & Society

Since its foundation in 2002 by a small band of retired scientists and engineers, the group has grown steadily, and now has over 30 members. Not only that, but, over the years, we’ve broadened our appeal to a much wider demographic. Today, only about half our members actually worked in these fields; the rest are just ordinary (dare I say, normal!) U3A folk who’ve joined the group because they’re keen to learn more about how science & technology has changed our world, and continues to do so at an ever-increasing pace. Which is why, when planning our meetings, we always try to choose topics that are familiar, accessible and, above all, relevant to everyday life (that’s why we have the word ‘SOCIETY’ in our name). Our speakers, all of whom are volunteers, take care to pitch their presentations at a level appropriate to our mixed audience, and they’re always happy to take questions if there’s anything you don’t understand.
