Music Appreciation
A small group which meets every fourth Thursday at 2 30pm to listen to music and talk about it.
Music Appreciation can sound very stuffy and serious, so perhaps a change of title is due. Those of us who remember fondly the TV programme Face the Music realise that you are allowed to enjoy music and while we can’t provide a dummy keyboard, we can offer an afternoon of good listening.
Recent and forthcoming sessions include a discussion on how jazz influenced composers of “serious” music from the 1920s onwards. Composers include Gershwin, Honegger and Milhaud; the violins of Cremona, the makers, Stradivari, Amati Guarneri and the composers Corelli, Vivaldi etc.; and tracing the rise of the virtuoso and famous composers and their music for films. This includes Vaughan Williams, Britten, Walton, Richard Rodney Bennet and more.
