Our course, “Picturing the 19th Century” continues until December and focuses on innovative artists in both Britain and the rest of Europe. Individual meetings will be devoted to Joaquim Sorolla, the watercolours of John singer Sargent, the artists’ colony of Pont Aven, with an emphasis on Paul Gauguin and, finally, Vincent van Gogh in the South.
From January 2019 we shall enjoy a short course devoted to “Painting America”, which will give a brief overview of the challenges facing artists as they sought to develop an “American School” independent of European influences, starting with the “Hudson River School” and finishing towards the end of the 19th century.
