We meet on the first Wednesday of the month, 10:00 to 12:00 at Crediton Golf Club. Just come right in and find us. You will always be made welcome.
Our creative writing group aims to:
• be mutually supportive
• be confidential
• show trust and respect for each other
• be fun, fun, fun
None of us had any substantial experience of creative writing when we started out, so we decided to make 'creative writing' anything we wanted it to be. Our focus has been on getting better at writing things that make sense for - and engage - others.
The group is democratic and dynamic, and as new members have joined they have had an equal say in the group's development.
We have taken a more systematic approach than we did in our first year. For the last few months we have looked closely at different aspects of the writing process: dialogue, settings, characters, voice and perspective.
The first official meeting was on March 7th 2018. We all agreed to write a few (or a lot) more words to follow on from this sentence: "There was only one thing in the cupboard." It was fascinating to see how differently we continued that in our own words. My own continuation of these opening words has now been worked into the opening of a story. Recently we used this famous photo of a train crash at Montparnasse railway station in Paris as a starting point for writing. Group members had to write about the scene from a chosen point of view - e.g. a bystander, someone in a nearby window, even the train itself. Click the links on the right to see some of the results.
Do contact me if you have any questions or thoughts, or would like to join the group. We always welcome new members. Don't think you need to be a writer before you join. The group is not for writers: it is for people who would like to try writing in a supportive and appreciative setting. Click the carrier pigeon above right to contact us by email - or phone me.
