Crediton & District

Intermediate Walks

The intermediate walk will be on the first Tuesday of the month and is planned to be between 4-5 miles, intended to fit in between the short walk, which aims for 2-3 miles and the Mooramblers walk of 6-8 miles.

The walks will vary from month to month, some walking in and around Crediton and others farther away. I will arrange lifts for walkers who do not have transport or are not confident enough to drive to far away.

2024 Walks

May Walk
Ten of us went on a very sunny walk this month led by Colin. Starting in Lapford Car park, we walked up the road to Handsford Farm, along the bridal way to Tonyfield Farm, across the main road and railway line to Nymet Rowland. Back along the road to the railway station, then across the main road again and back up to Lapford. A lovely walk through remote countryside with fine views thanks to two steep climbs. About five and a half miles. Then tea, cake and panini at the Arc, a lovely community cafe in the village.

April Walk
Seven of us caught the train from Crediton to Okehampton and another member joined us at the station. We walked three and a half miles, firstly along the old tram way to the viaduct where we followed the path along the East Okement river, then uphill through Halstock wood to Halstock Farm. From there over East Hill, then back down to the station where refreshments were enjoyed, before we caught the train back to Crediton. The weather was kind, but a little windy in places, the walking boots got quite muddy. A very enjoyable walk led by Colin.

March
For March’s walk, 12 walkers took the train to Exmouth and then walked the footpath beside the estuary back to Topsham. With a coffee stop at the Puffing Billy, glorious sunshine and spectacular views over the estuary, it was a truly enjoyable walk. Many of us finished with lunch in Topsham before catching the train back to Crediton. At about 6 miles, the walk was slightly longer than usual but with no mud and no hills, we managed it with ease.

Feb
Eight of us met on Tuesday 6th of February to brave the mud around Lapford. From the car park in Lapford we walked across the fields to the hamlet of Fileigh and then across more fields to Cobley Farm, returning to Lapford by quiet lanes. Although the mud was a prominent feature, It was a lovely walk with views of Dartmoor in the distance and good company. Thank you so much to Colin for organising it for us.

Jan 2023
Hello everyone, Colin Bowman led the walk on Wednesday 25th January.

Despite the misty but dry weather 10 hardy souls set off from Crediton railway station, turning left towards Fordton and then right at the signed footpath. This footpath was still slightly frozen which meant that it was not too muddy.

At the end of the footpath we turned left onto the lane, passing Salmonhutch and climbing uphill. At Upton Barton we turned left up a narrow lane towards Fordton Cross.

At the crossroads 3 people turned left to walk back to the station (a total of two and a half miles) while the other 7 walkers carried on to the golf course where we had tea, coffee and cake. We then took the footpath through the golf course and back to the station, arriving there at 12-10pm, a total of three and a quarter miles.
