Activities
The allotment plot was allocated to the Group in February and we have been working to break up the ground which clearly had not been worked for a while. There was a small patch of strawberry plants, some raspberry canes and a large blackcurrant bush. There was also a small, somewhat rickety, shed which is fine for storing some tools and a watering can. We were lucky enough to have a shed donated to the Group and we engaged with Crawley Men-in-Sheds who kindly transported it to the plot. We also have a collection of pallets with which we plan to build a couple of raised beds. Produce wise, we have had limited success due to the attention of slugs and snails. They managed to eat all but two of our runner bean plants, destroyed the first set of butternut squash plants, and feasted happily on our radishes and strawberries. Currently, we have courgettes, cucumbers, the second try at butternut squash and some main crop potatoes. If the foliage is anything to go by, we are in for a good harvest! We have recently planted some brassicas, so hopefully we will have plenty of healthy cauliflowers etc to look forward to. Other plot holders have made us very welcome and we are looking forward to planning, planting and harvesting in the future.
