Amblers & Walkers Groups
We have four walking groups which provide for different distances and terrain.
The Amblers and Walkers groups have all been known to quench their thirst and have lunch during the course of a walk.

Walks up to 4 miles at a gentle pace (and as far as possible, free of stiles, hills and mud)
Winter walks are normally on hard surfaces or town walks. Our current programme includes London walks, coastal walks and summer countryside walks. The Amblers is a friendly sociable group and there is normally a pub lunch at the end of each walk. Over the last few months we have walked around Edenbridge, Warnham, Shoreham, Henfield, Cranleigh, Handcross and East Grinstead and our future programme will offer a similar variety of locations.
New members are welcome at the moment.
This group has been formed from members of the Amblers Group who needed a slightly faster pace of walking to stretch their legs. Walks are an average of 4 miles, and walkers need to cope with uneven ground, inclines, steps and the occasional stile. In May we walked along the River Arun in Bramber on a fine day (lovely countryside), and for June a shortened walk around Hassocks on a very wet day (thoroughly appreciating chance to dry off with a unscheduled coffee stop and then a scheduled lunch). This group is currently closed to new members whilst there is a transition between the original Amblers group members and the new Amblers Extra group. However, it is anticipated that if there is no further movement of participants the new group will keep its membership at the current level.
Longer walks up to 5 miles. Third Friday of the month at the Hawth Car Park.
We have many varied and interesting walks through our ever changing countryside, some in areas we have not visited before, thus broadening our horizons and introducing us to new venues.
A good walk in good company with a good lunch at the end makes you glad to be alive!
Walks of 5 to 8 miles and sometimes a little longer.
Fourth Thursday of the month at the Hawth Car Park.
If you are interested in natural history, architecture, history, world events, local issues and any other topic and would like to chat about all this whilst enjoying the physical pleasure of walking with like minded companions through some of the most beautiful countryside why not join us.
We are the Crawley U3A Walkers Extra group and we meet on the 4th Thursday of the month at the Hawth car park (0n the right as you enter) at 9.25 am.
The group is restricted to about 20 and all members are expected to take their turn, usually in pairs, to organise and lead a walk each year.
Bringing up the rear!
As o'er the lovely vales and hills - Your happy hikers troup,
Don't forget that lonely guy - The Backmarker of the group.
He's gathering in the stragglers, He’s closing up the ranks.
But for all his dedicated work - He gets precious little thanks.
He helps his colleagues over stiles, And stays to close the gates.
He's often left quite far behind, For no-one ever waits.
You can take in all the sights, As you chatter to your chums.
The only sight he ever sees - Is other people's bums.
The party goes quite far ahead, Then stops to rest and scoff,
But immediately he catches up - The whole lot wanders off.
And when at last he passes on, He knows he's naught to fear.
He’s earned his place in Paradise, Just bringing up the rear.
With thanks to Audrey Salter - Leader with HF Holidays
