Holme Valley

Walking (ambling)

Not surprisingly, walking groups are popular choices for Holme Valley u3a members.

Our walks all have experienced leaders and we ask them to check out the route first. They will make sure someone is responsible for leading – and for making sure no-one gets left behind.

The u3a provides third party insurance for members on these walks. Consequently it does not cover us for personal accident/injury – we are all responsible for our own safety.

Stout walking boots, shoes or trainers are recommended and poles are always useful. Always come prepared for the terrain and weather. Winter walking particularly can be very muddy!

The ambling group does easier, slower pace walks although some experience of rambling is still useful. There are currently "ambles" on three days a week. The walks vary from very easy around an hour along a track or path to walks of up to 2 hours on more varied terrain. Walks are designed to avoid stiles, roads and any steep gradients.

The main group walk is on Tuesday morning. This walk lasts around 2hrs. there may be some gradients and stiles on these walks, but nothing too arduous.
There is also a walk on Wednesday (usually morning) which lasts around an hour. This is generaly on relatively flat paths and is for those who are curently unable to manage the main Tuesday walk.
Some of the group also walk on Thursday. Similar walks to Tuesday. In the summer months these are in the afternoon to take advantage of the lighter nights and are often further afield with a cafe stop enroute.

If you are looking for something more challenging then try one of our other groups.

The easy walking group usually walks for around 2 hours, covering 3-4 miles and routes will involve some hills and stiles but will avoid anything too strenuous. Walks are on the 2nd and 4th Thursday mornings of each month. For more information, or if you would like to join this group, please click here - easy walking group – to send an email.

For more experienced walkers the moderate walking group meets every Thursday morning. These walks are more strenuous, covering 6-8 miles and will include some challenging terrain. Details of these walks can be viewed here walking (moderate).

If you are not sure which group would be best for you, drop a line to our Groups Co-ordinator who will put you in touch with relevant group leaders.
