Horley & District History group have been going strong for five years this April 2019. The group follows a theme for about three months: which is group member led and, when possible, an outing is arranged pertinent to the period we are exploring.
A period of history is chosen of which we have scant knowledge and appeals to the majority - not following chronological order - merely times that appeal.
At the moment we are looking at “Influential Women”.
This was a result of researching the previous theme 1901 to 1914, and the years of women's suffrage.
This has been so interesting and popular, we are still going strong!
We have looked at twelve women so far: Ada Lovelace, Harriet Beechorstowe, Bess of Hardwick & Rosa Parks to name a few and we still have another ten on our list we would like to find out more about - fascinating!
Research follows a similar pattern. Each group member chooses an aspect of the time to research then, at the monthly meeting, two or three members report back on their findings. They usually talk for around 15 to 20 minutes - followed by a discussion on issues raised in their talk - this can get quite lively!
If you'd like to expand your knowledge of different historical eras - you will be very welcome to join us.
