Heybridge Basin - March 2024

With a slightly improved weather forecast, our March visit was a return to Heybridge Basin where we hoped to see large numbers of wading birds before they leave their winter feeding grounds.

Although the tide times were not ideal, we did indeed see large numbers of birds, although positive identification was sometimes a little difficult for those birds at the distant water's edge.

Once again, thanks to Jane for her excellent record keeping, which again shows a significant range of species observed.

The complete sightings list is as follows (in no particular order):
Mallard
Cormorant
Brent Goose
Black Tailed Godwit
Herring Gull
Black Headed Gull
Little Egret
Teal
Dunlin
Pied Wagtail
Pochard
Redshank
Magpie
Hedge Sparrow
Avocet
Starling
Goldfinch

With many of the birds at a distance, not many photo opportunities presented themselves, except that is for some very obliging Hedge Sparrows, one of which is included here.

With the following day offering an even better weather forecast, Alison and I took the opportunity to visit Maldon Promenade, where a number of species were more 'photographically accessible'.

I have included a number of photographs taken at Maldon.
