Hanningfield Reservoir - January 2024

For its latest outing, the Birdwatching Group recently made a second visit to Hanningfield Reservoir.

The morning was extremely cold and our visit to the Lyster Hide proved to be very disappointing with virtually no birdlife visible.

Our visit to the RAWL Hide was more successful with good displays of ducks (mainly Teal) and Greylag geese in the distance.

The visit was made even more enjoyable by both the number of Robins that were clearly unafraid of us as we walked around the site and the entertaining antics of the feeding Blue Tits, Great Tits and grey squirels directly outside the window of the Visitor Centre/Cafe.

The highlight for me was the brief visit to one of the bird feeders by a Greater Spotted Woodpecker.

As for previous visits, many thanks to Jane for her excellent record keeping, with 16 different species noted during our visit.

The complete sightings list is as follows (in no particular order):
Robins
Greater spotted woodpecker
Blue tits
Great tits
Cormorants
Mallards
Magpies
Teal
Pied wagtail
Crows
Swans (Mute)
Black headed gulls
Herring Gull
Dunnock
Blackbirds
Greylag Geese

A small number of pictures from our visit are attached.

Our next visit is planned for 8th Febuary, weather permitting, when we will be revisiting Fingringhoe Wick. More details to follow.
