Heybridge Basin - December 2023

For our fifth outing, the re-formed Birdwatching Group recently visited Heybridge Basin.

Although a very cold and overcast morning, the tide times were almost perfect, with high tide due a couple of hours after the start of our visit which resulted in large numbers of feeding waders gradually moving up the foreshore towards us.

As for previous visits, many thanks to Jane for her excellent record keeping, with again over 20 different species noted during our visit.

The complete sightings list is as follows (in no particular order):
Redshank
Moorhen
Mute Swan
Black Backed Gull
Common Gull
Black Headed Gull
Dunlin
Avocet
Shell Duck
Oyster Catcher
Canada Goose
Little Grebe
Great Crested Grebe
Mallard
Golden Plover
Curlew
Hedge Sparrow
Godwit
Cormorant
Lapwing
Goldfinch
Magpie
Wood Pigeon

A small number of pictures from our visit is included, (mainly taken in low light and at a significant distance).

Our next visit is planned for 11th January, weather permitting, when we will be revisiting Hanningfield Reservoir. More details to follow.
