Skelmanthorpe U3A Geology Group

This course will run for two years, if member so wish.

The course is broadly based on the, old Northern G.C.S.E. Geology but with an emphasis on Yorkshire’s Geology and local interests such as mining

It will run as follows:-

1. Earth Structure.

The formation of the Earth, Plate Tectonics, Mountain Building, Earthquakes, Vulcanicity.

2. Geological Map exercises.

3. Identifying Minerals, using hand specimens

4. Rock Types- Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic.

5. The Evolution of Life, using Fossils.

If numbers are less than six, the class will be held at 15, Rectory Lane, Emley. If numbers are larger, then a chapel schoolroom will be used and we will have to pay for the room, which will not be much.

Open University videos will be used. Do not be overawed by this. Only the relevant parts to us will be used.

Now to Equipment to bring:-

Paper, pen and pencils lead and coloured, ruler and protractor and a rubber. There are two good textbooks which we can usually get second hand in good condition and cheaply from Amazon. There is also a good Yorkshire Geology book available from the Mining Museum.

The course will run as fast or slow, as you wish. You will not be left behind.

The class will run on a Friday morning from 10-00 until about 1200. There will be a tea break halfway to suit all tastes. Start date. Friday, November 1st 2019
