Louise Moss a member of U3A writes :
Like so many who belong to the U3A, I am among the group that was asked by the government to stay at home. I live alone and within days, I felt depressed, lonely and cut off from society. I knew that many other people felt the same way, so I decided to start WAC-19. Each day, I put a new short story on the website, selected to bring a smile to the face and lift the spirits.
I know how difficult it is that all the groups have had to cease their activities and hope you and your members enjoy the stories, which can be found on

Newsletter April 2020

We have been asked to socially distance ourselves and asked to self-isolate. As a committee we have considered the situation and decided to cancel group meetings until further notice. This includes the members monthly meetings.

THIS TRIP IS CANCELLED. The cheques for the balance have not been cashed. Anyone who paid the balance directly into the bank will receive a refund as soon as we can arrange it. We are trying to get the deposits we paid to reserve the booking back. We will keep you updated on this.

THIS TRIP IS ALSO CANCELLED. Your money will be refunded in full as no tickets had been booked. Please bear with us and we will get your money back to you as soon as we can.

We will not be asking for renewals in April. We will see how events transpire and let you know the outcome.

We will do our best to try and keep you informed of what’s happening as and when it transpires. We will issue a monthly newsletter by email and put a notice on the outside U3A notice board at Skelmanthorpe Library. There are a few people not on email. If you know of anyone, can you please advise them of this.

We appreciate that some people will be totally housebound and not have friends or relatives to hand. If any member needs help, either picking up a prescription or getting some groceries, please let me know and I, or a member of the committee, will come and help if we can.

I will send out a newsletter at the end of the week.

Let’s hope this doesn’t drag on and we can all get our lives back. Keep safe.

SPANISH CONVERSATION. We are looking for someone to take over our Spanish Conversation Group. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to take this on?

We have been contacted by the Denby Dale Tennis Club in Denby Dale enquiring whether any of our U3A members would be interested in forming a group to play tennis using their facilities. They have two all-weather outside courts and would be able to offer some exclusive playing times to our members.

It could be for members who have played tennis in the past or interested in trying out tennis for the first time and to play Social tennis within the U3A group.

They also have a professional coach who coaches beginners, improvers etc. who would be willing to offer her services should they be required with those using them sharing the cost.

If you are interested, would you please email me. I would then suggest we set up a meeting with someone from the tennis club to see about times, cost etc. I understand Holmfirth U3A have a similar set up with their local tennis club

Membership Renewals

We have decided to change to a system where we have one renewal date each year for everyone (April).

Those who have paid already in the last few months will get the renewal fee at a pro rata figure. People who join after April will also pay on a pro rata basis for the rest of their first year (e.g. if someone joins in September, they will pay £7.50 for the first year, then the full amount at the next April).

This is why a few people have not yet had their renewal reminders - they will come to everyone
