Tuesday 31 March 2020 1.30pm Skelmanthorpe District Council Building
Guest speaker: Don Witton
Topic : Euphorbias and other Spring Flowering Perennials
Don comes highly recommended from a couple of local gardening clubs as both an excellent and informative speaker and an expert in Euphorbias.
Don holds a Plant Heritage National Collection of hardy Euphorbia consisting of 124 different species and cultivars. Don has featured on Gardening World and on BBC Tatton Park Show. He has staged exhibits of euphorbia at Tatton Show and received a collection of medals, including two gold. Don has also featured in the RHS Magazine.
He grows his Euphorbias at Firvale Allotment Gardens on the southern edge of Harthill near Worksop. These can be viewed by appointment between March -July with proceeds going to the National Open Garden Scheme.
The cost of the meeting will be £4.00pp to include the cost of the speaker, room hire and refreshments.
Don will also be bringing a selection of euphorbias for sale at the meeting.
Tuesday 21 April 2020 1.30pm Visit to the Greenhouses at Thornes Park Wakefield followed by refreshments at the Holmfield Arms (within Thornes Park)
(PLEASE NOTE FOR APRIL ONLY THE MEETING WILL BE ON THE THIRD AND NOT THE LAST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH DUE TO THE U3A TRIP TO BEAMISH BEING ON THE LAST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH)
By popular demand, I have arranged with Roger Parkinson, the volunteer speaker from The Woodland Trust, who inspired us all at our January meeting, to visit the greenhouses at Thornes Park in Wakefield which is one of the many places he works with local community groups.
Roger is going to give us a guided tour and explain about the work which goes on there. There will be plants for sale, the proceeds of which go to local causes.
Nearer the time I shall confirm parking and meeting arrangements with Roger.
I have also reserved us a table from 2.45pm at the Holmfield Arms pub which is in Thornes Park for after the meeting for those of us who might want to have a drink/coffee/cake etc.
I have not pre-ordered refreshments as I thought people would want to do this themselves.
If anyone is prepared to take anyone in their car or if anyone needs a lift, please let me know and I am sure we can sort this out -we have always managed to do so on previous occasions.
I thought perhaps we could give a small donation to Roger for either the project he is involved in at Thornes Park or for The Woodland Trust, so dependant on numbers, I might suggest £1 -£2pp
PLEASE LET DIANE KNOW IF YOU ARE ATTENDING
