Skelmanthorpe & District

Welcome to Skelmanthorpe & District U3A

This U3A started life at an Inaugural Meeting on 18th April 2017.

We cover all the villages in and around the Denby Dale Parish in south Kirklees, West Yorkshire, and are centred in Skelmanthorpe.

At the initial launch meeting, in February 2017 interest was expressed in some 66 activity groups, not all of which will ultimately prove to be viable. However, we have managed to get approximately 20+ groups set up at the present time

We are part of the wider U3A movement, in which retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for the sheer joy of discovery. Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.

Membership fees include a £4 contribution to the national-level Third Age Trust and a £1 contribution to the annual cost of our IT administration system.

Our group activities are all run by volunteers, who are not, by any means, all experts. Any of our members can join any group. Do get in touch if you want to start a new group. Groups are self-sufficient and some make a small charge to cover their costs (room hire, teas/coffees, etc.)

We are now a registered Charity under Charity No 1202000. In accordance with the Charity Commission’s requirements a copy of our Financial Policy is shown in the margin together with a copy of the Safeguarding Policies and Procedures
