Welcome to Skelmanthorpe & District U3A
This U3A started life at an Inaugural Meeting on 18th April 2017. Somewhere around 110 people attended and 52 people had brought the necessary (£15 in cash or cheque) to become members straight away.
We cover all the villages in and around the Denby Dale Parish in south Kirklees, West Yorkshire, and are centred in Skelmanthorpe.
At the initial launch meeting, in February, interest was expressed in some 66 activity groups, not all of which will ultimately prove to be viable. The largest groups would appear to include Art, Bird Watching, Bowling, Crafts, Dancing, Family History, Gardening, History, Information Technology, Reading, Theatre Visits, and Walking.
We are part of the wider U3A movement, in which retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for the sheer joy of discovery. Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.
We have set our annual membership at £15 p.a. from 18th April 2017 and, originally, with reductions for those joining part way through a year. However, the implementation of our new computerised administration system allows us to have a rolling membership year - i.e. in whatever month that you join, you will get a full 12-month membership from that month.
Membership fees include a £3.50 contribution to the national-level Third Age Trust and a 50p contribution to the annual cost of our IT administration system.
Our group activities are all run by volunteers, who are not, by any means, all experts. Any of our members can join any group. Do get in touch if you want to start a new group. Groups are self-sufficient and some make a small charge to cover their costs (room hire, teas/coffees, etc.)
