Within Cheddar Valley U3A there are approximately 50 special-interest groups. Many of these groups fall into natural categories, such as history groups and language groups. This website page gives information on those groups which do not naturally fall into the same categories as other groups. Please see the main "GROUPS" page of this website to find the days that Groups meet. Please see the "CONTACTS" page of this website to find how to make contact with Group Leaders.
CLASSIC FILMS GROUP
Films shown in the past include: "Rashomon", a thought-provoking film by the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa; "Un Carnet de Bal", an entertaining tale about a widow who tracks down the men she might have married other than her deceased husband; "The Iron Horse", a silent film about the building of the rail link between America’s East and West coasts; the first Hollywood film to be shot on location, "My Darling Clementine", an early Western starring a very young Henry Fonda; "The Lives of Others", an Oscar-winning German film set in the former East Germany; and many others of great interest.
The Dining Club aims to arrange evening suppers, lunchtime dinners, lunches, buffet lunches, and maybe even the occasional Sunday lunch. Our hope is that members will take it in turns to organise just one event, at their chosen venue.
EASY-GOING MATHS GROUP
Easy-Going Maths is a small, stress-free, mutually supportive group for those who would like to refresh some basic skills and give their brain a work-out. Some members always believed they were ‘no good at maths’ - we aim to change that perception. Some are looking to gain more confidence helping with grandchildren’s homework, as Maths teaching today is often different from the way most of us were taught. As a group we work together through National Curriculum Primary School workbooks, all focussing on the same topic. But as group leader, I also provide extra materials, enabling everyone to choose their own comfortable level and pace. We start with the most basic skills, and build in small incremental steps, focusing on in-depth familiarity and confidence, rather than rushing ahead, but with plenty of challenge for those ready for it.
Mindfulness is the most simple, yet one of the hardest, things to do for yourself - a practice designed to change the way you think. It seems that in spite of the comfortable and wealthy world we live in our minds are mostly troubled. We worry about the future, spend time regretting the past, and busily rush though the day hardly noticing the world around us.
Mindfulness is a practice that helps us to stop, notice, then slowly change those unnecessary thoughts and learn to let them go.
Sessions will run for one hour per week, over six consecutive weeks, and will give you the chance to try this technique, discover something about yourself and the way your mind works. There’s no sitting on the floor or singing strange mantras, just sitting in a comfortable chair.
The group discusses various philosophical topics as chosen by members, occasionally focussing on a particular school or individual philosopher.
We are a group of people who love quizzing and we meet once a month. You come when you can, no fixed teams, randomly selected on the day which means we mix & make new friends learning a lot in the process. Our Question Masters are volunteers from the group who set the questions when they can fit it in to their busy schedules and we meet in a pub.
