Card-Playing And Board Game Groups
Within Cheddar Valley U3A there are several special-interest groups dedicated to the mental challenges of playing card games and board games. Please see the main "GROUPS" page of this website to find the days that Groups meet. Please see the "CONTACTS" page of this website to find how to make contact with Group Leaders.
BRIDGE (TUESDAY) GROUP
The Tuesday Bridge Club is a group of mixed ability bridge players. It is very friendly and is supportive of new players who are not quite confident enough to join a club. We do score but there are no prizes; it is just for our own information. We play in each others' houses and there is always a short break for tea and cake.
BRIDGE (WEDNESDAY) GROUP
Canasta is a partnership game of the Rummy family, and appeals to card players of all skill levels. The game is fast and full of exciting twists and challenges, which has created one of the most fascinating card games ever devised. Canasta may be played by any number of players from two to six.
The group meets twice per month for two hours. Help is given to new members.
The Card-Playing Group plays card games according to the numbers and wishes of those present. Some might play whist with others playing crib, but it is entirely dependent on the numbers present and their wishes. The Group does not play bridge.
Mah-Jong is a charming, late nineteenth century, Chinese game played with engraved tiles. Although the rules are quite intricate, the rudiments of play are surprisingly easy to master. Similar to rummy in its basic format.
Rummikub is a tile-based game that has similarities to the card-game Rummy. This Group meets in Cheddar Library on Monday mornings.
The Scrabble Group is well established and has a regular and enthusiastic membership. The Group normally play two games of competitive but friendly Scrabble with a tea break in between. New members are always welcome and given encouragement and help if required. Why not give our Scrabble group a try - you may love it?!
