Practical Philosophy Group
Meeting at the Group Leader's home.
The Group is full, but we are happy to add you to the waiting list.
This Group has now been meeting for a year, and has discussed many and varied subjects in the pursuit of a personal philosophy. Ed White, Group leader, has limited numbers to 6 members, being a comfortable number to fit into his dining room and thus avoid any costs. There is a small waiting list, but no-one shows any sign of boredom – yet!
Ed says ‘I have always been interested in philosophy – that is, what I’m calling Practical Philosophy - how we all cope with everyday life, our personal solutions. This is envisaged as a discussion group, with the aim that members might review their own approach to daily life by listening to how others handle and cope with theirs, and to better understand those around us’.
Although it was not intended to debate the classical stuff, we do recognise the value of ancient philosophers and philosophies, as one should always be prepared to learn from those who have gone before. One of the OED’s definitions of philosophy pinpoints the subject matter – ‘The theory or attitude that guides one’s behaviour.’
The ethos of this group is one of convivial and open discussion, and as Leader, I try and keep the peace if necessary, and ensure tea and coffee are on tap! As well as the practical advantage of limiting the size of the Group to 6 members, it has encouraged open-ness and trust between everyone, a crucial aspect when sharing one’s innermost thoughts and opinions.
We meet every second Wednesday of the month, at 10.00, and sessions rarely last more than 2 hours.
