Climate Change
Coordinator: Nigel Nixon
Group web page editor is Nigel Nixon.
Following the course given by Mike Green in the winter and spring of 2020 those who had attended decided to set up a group to expand and extend some of the issues discussed in the course. Members of the group made a short presentation of a topic, normally two per meeting, and a discussion ensued. When we felt we had run out of topics to discuss we stopped meeting.
Mike is currently offering an updated version of the course in autumn 2022. It would be split into five two-hour sessions each with a tea/coffee break in the middle – about eight hours of learning in all. The aim is to allow plenty of time for discussion.
The content of the sessions would be as follows.
1. The changing temperature of the Earth, historical and post-industrial – evidence and impacts, such as sea-level changes.
2. The greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases as the cause of the present heating of the atmosphere and oceans.
3. Global energy use and changes since about 1850, including dependence on fossil fuels and the emergence of renewables.
4. Reducing and eliminating fossil fuel use – possible ways forward.
5. Scientific advice on tackling the crisis, past political actions, and international, national and personal actions that now need to be taken.
Details of the time and place of the meetings will be arranged with intending participants.
Contact Mike of you are interested.
