Watercolour Painting
Watercolour Painting - Christine Cutts
Whether you already enjoy watercolour painting or are a complete beginner and fancy having a go, you are very welcome to come along and join in with our group. Basic tuition is available and members will happily share tips, ideas and knowledge. Our sessions can be varied - sometimes there is a particular theme, other times we will bring along a photo or piece we want to work on. We have also met for additional outdoor sessions, weather permitting.
Here are some examples of the group's work. Please click on the picture for a full screen view.
My name is Christine Cutts and I joined the group a few years ago, running it for the last two. When I started, not having done any art for over 50 years, I had little equipment and even less knowledge but have enjoyed the informal sessions which allow us all to work at our own pace, experiment, ask questions and watch others. It's lovely seeing everyone progress and being part of the group gives me focus, encouragement and friendship.
Hi, my name is Rosemary, I joined the Watercolour group in 2017 even though I had not touched a brush and paint since leaving school in 1967! I really enjoyed attending the monthly meetings everyone was helpful, friendly and encouraging. I soon found I could paint nice pictures and especially love painting animals such as my dog Blu a Bedlington Terrier.

I took up watercolour painting with the U3A a couple of years ago as a complete beginner, my last attempt at art being in school when I was written off as “completely hopeless”. Even though my pictures rarely turn out as I anticipate, I am enjoying experimenting with different ideas and techniques. There’s no pressure, if it works out, great, if not, I enjoy the focus and calmness I find it generates. Having the support of others in the group is also a great help as we share ideas and tips. I started watercolour painting in 2005. Until then I was always too busy with work and family and never really had any artistic ambitions either at school or afterwards. I decided I would try an evening class for beginners and found I enjoyed it and was able to paint, although there was lots to learn. Not every painting gets framed or even pinned on the wall but every attempt teaches me something new. I'm encouraged to read the same sort of comments from professional artists. Give it a go. It's a learning curve but no one's going to judge you if it goes wrong. The watercolour group are both welcoming and friendly and always willing to offer advice and encouragement. Bill Price
I have been involved in watercolour painting for many years now. Throughout this time, I have enjoyed the experience of learning and practising new techniques, then sometimes savouring the satisfactory feeling of having produced hopefully pleasing artwork. This has always been enhanced by being amongst like-minded people, which, of course, was provided by the U3A pre Covid, but since then, I regularly contribute to the Newsletter and hope this will continue.
