Improve your French
Our new name replaces the original 'Useful French' title: we hope this will make our purpose clearer. The group was set up in response to demand following our Open Event in September 2022 and began with a handful of rusty but enthusiastic francophiles. After a hesitant start numbers grew, bringing a great diversity of ability and confidence.
One or two members were quite fluent and they have gone on to form Friendly French Conversation, which has since attracted more members. Others joined who were very keen but so rusty that they were almost afraid to say anything. So we have created a third group, French for the Terrified, offering an even gentler, easier reintroduction to the French they have forgotten.
Improve your French still has members remaining! But we could take one or two more. It is aimed at anyone who learned French possibly long ago and now lacks the confidence and the tools needed to be able to join in with a conversation in French. Verbs are often a problem! We fill the gap between the chatty and the more basic, and should suit most at this level of rustiness. Our meetings are geared to members' needs and interests. We meet twice monthly, on the first and third Monday afternoons, led by a former French teacher who uses a variety of materials including flash cards, stories, French songs and videos. And we have a native speaker to help too!
