The culture developed by the Ancient Greeks has had a profound influence upon the development of our modern world and has been called the cradle of western civilisation. The course concentrates on ancient Athens since the city played such a role in the birth of democracy, politics, philosophy, pottery, sculpture, architecture, art, medicine, literature and drama. All this was in play against a background of mythology, war and religion. Amongst the great figures who feature in the Ancient Greek story are Plato and Socrates (philosophers), Solon, Cleisthenes, Themistocles and Pericles (politicians), Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides (playwrights),Herodotus, Thucydides (historians), Callicrates, Ictinus(architects) and Phideas (sculptor). The subject will help you understand the origins of many of the features of our modern way of life.
