November’s Monthly Meeting
Members and guests enjoyed an entertaining talk by Martin Fish entitled ‘Simply Gardening: My Gardening Life So Far’ which hardly mentioned plans at all. He began by hoping that his audience were not confused and expecting Michael Fish, the weather man from the TV which had happened to him previously and most definitely put him at a disadvantage when trying to give an interesting and informative talk! He began by describing his ‘roots’ - his early life in Nottinghamshire, & his apprenticeship aged 16 into horticulture with the local council Parks Department. His career has been varied and has led to many TV, radio and writing credits and judging for the RHS. Colleague’s names were dropped into the talk eg, Geoff Hamilton, Alan Titchmarsh and Thelma Barlow. His experience was demonstrated by his time as North Yorkshire Show Director for the Harrogate Flower show & he currently broadcasts for BBC Radios York and Nottingham. He & his wife, Jill Fish, also give joint talks, Gardening on the Menu about how to get the best from your vegetables plot and how to make the most of your harvest in the kitchen. Martin lives near Ripon and he & Jill provide tours of their garden followed by tea and homemade cake. The Gardening Group have a visit booked for June 2020 (contact Mary Sadler if interested) At the end of the talk questions were invited and did include the inevitable gardening queries!
December’s meeting is the Christmas Social with coffee & mince pies. From 10am, Friday 20th December at the usual venue, Leyburn Arts & Community Centre.
