Creative writing
Creative Writing Group
The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month between 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm at the
host’s home. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 10 people.
The aim of the group is for members to nurture, develop and, most of all, enjoy their
creative writing, whether it be flash fiction, short stories, memoir, novel extracts, poetry or any
other form and to share their work with the other members of the group. Previous writing
experience is not necessary. The best way to learn and improve is to listen to the other writers in the
group but support will always be available if required. Everyone has their own style.
Typically, the sessions take the form of members reading out a piece, no longer than 1,000
words (prose) or 40 lines (poetry), which they have prepared prior to the meeting from a supplied
prompt and hearing any comments, supportive and/or constructive, on it from the other group
members. After a break for refreshments, members usually participate in a writing exercise set by
the group leader or another member for around 30 to 45 minutes (including sharing results and
feedback). Finally a prompt is agreed on for the following month.
