Mah Jong is played with tiles rather like dominoes but with Chinese characters on them. Players play as individuals (rather than with a partner) and are aiming to collect and discard tiles until they have collected them into sets rather like the card game Rummy. When this basic game is mastered players can try to build up different combinations of tiles with wonderful names such as Grand Sequence, Unique Wonder, Dragonfly, etc. Mind you, we don't have to learn all of these tile sequences - we use a crib sheet to remind us! Each game lasts 15 to 20 minutes and is played by 2, 3 or 4 players.
