The War Between the States
The American Civil War 1861-1865
The War Between the States, now referred to as The American Civil War, occurred during the middle of the nineteenth century. This war resulted in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers. It was a conflict on a scale that must rank against the horrors of the First World War which would be half a century in the future.
Histories are written by the victors, however, the aim of this course is to give an understanding of the reasons behind the secession of the Southern States from the USA to form The Confederate States of America and hence the military conflict.
We will study the History of the United States to the outbreak of the first shots, the carnage of the War and its aftermath known as reconstruction.
