Poetry Reading

Convenor: Margaret Walch.
The Poetry for Pleasure group meets at 2pm on the second Tuesday of each month.

Over the past years we have met every month and listened to poetry on a wide variety of topics; often it relates to the season – Spring, Summer etc, and, not surprisingly, different aspects of nature. But we are also interested in people - adults and children, and the relationship between them; Ageing was a topic that we looked at both seriously and humorously. It has happened that the poets we have chosen are mostly British, as early as the Anglo-Saxon poets, through Chaucer , Shakespeare and Donne to the Romantics, Betjeman and poets of the present day such as McGough and Duffy. The time spent in preparation for the Group - reading through poetry books and deciding which to bring - is itself a great pleasure, and it often seems that the conversation sparked by the poems is as enjoyable and enlightening as the poetry itself.
